AN INDUSTRY-WIDE CHALLENGE

Many of those working in the travel insurance space – from incumbent insurers to insurtechs, medical assistance providers to air ambulance companies, fintechs to funeral repatriation specialists – travel the world regularly.

While we have witnessed the world’s wonders and connected with countless cultures, we understand the profound impact our industry has on the environment. We also recognize our responsibility to protect and preserve the very places we hold dear.

Although many companies have sustainable travel programmes in place, collective industry action will raise awareness of the need to reduce, reconsider or offset our travel on a wider scale.

It will help bridge the gaps where carbon balancing currently doesn’t exist. It will help organisations to make more conscious decisions around their need to travel. And it will encourage them to opt for the most sustainable mode of transport where feasible.

HOW DOES THE TRAVEL INSURANCE ECO CHALLENGE WORK?

A baton will be passed between global travel insurance industry representatives. As the baton makes its way to different cities and countries, each leg of its journey will be carbon balanced by the baton carrier, using Temwa’s carbon calculator. 

As the global travel insurance industry goes about its business, travels to meet clients and partners, or attend events, the baton will travel with it – all the while serving as a reminder to the baton carrier to think about the impact of their journey. 

When the baton carrier reaches their destination, they pass the baton to an industry colleague in that destination. And so the baton begins its next journey.

We’ll be charting the baton’s movements on the map below – to show its journey and current location – fostering a sense of shared adventure and environmental responsibility.

The challenge for the industry is to keep the baton moving and share news of its progress – in order to raise awareness of carbon balancing efforts, and sustainable travel choices.

To spark innovation in sustainable travel, we challenge you to think outside the conventional modes of transportation. Imagine cycling through continents, paddling across lakes, or even taking a scenic train journey to your next meeting. Showcase your most creative travel solutions, and let’s spotlight some extraordinary journeys.

The aim is for the baton to complete its 2024 journey at the INNOVATE THIS conference in London on 11 & 12 September. Will it make it? Let’s see if we can make it happen!

Once you have the baton, you’re committed to making your next work trip as sustainable as possible. Take the baton with you on your trip and be sure to take photos or videos of yourself with the baton wherever you are in the world – and share news of your sustainability efforts (#TravelInsuranceEcoChallenge).

This will highlight the diversity of the world we’re trying to protect and raise awareness of the Eco Challenge to encourage others to reduce, reconsider and offset their travel where needed.

Pass the baton on

Unless you’re taking the baton on a return trip, when you reach your destination, it’s time to pass the baton to the next participant. This can either be an industry colleague of your choosing – or someone we put you in contact with. Either way, the Eco Challenge thrives on the spirit of working together.

Balance your carbon footprint

If you travelled by road or air – use the carbon calculator to donate to Temwa’s reforestation project. Your participation will directly contribute to the planting of trees in an effort to combat climate change.
